- RETIRED 09/01/2009 -

Since 1972, Chief Stephen M. Hubbs served as a firefighter with the Deptford Fire Department. Starting as a junior member with the Tacoma Fire Company, he progressed through the ranks to become that company's assistant chief in 1985. When the Deptford Township Board of Fire commissioners decided in 1981 that career members were needed to supplement the daytime responses, he was the sixth firefighter hired. While assigned as the fire department mechanic, he continued his fire service education and became well versed on all aspects of fire department operations, specializing in Fire Prevention and Fire Investigation.

Steve was reassigned to the Bureau of Fire Prevention in 1988 as a Fire Inspector. He became the Assistant Fire Marshal in 1991 and was promoted to Fire Marshal / Fire Official in 1993, assuming command of the Bureau. In early 2003, Steve was promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief and became the Deputy Chief later the same year. When Chief Michael Gallagher retired in August of 2004, D/C Hubbs was appointed as the Chief of the Fire Department. As Fire Marshal, Chief Hubbs expanded the Bureau of Fire Prevention to include 10 firefighter/inspectors and a total of six fire investigators. A computerized incident reporting system was also established for fire, inspection and investigation reporting.

Steve is also a New Jersey certified Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic. He has worked part-time for the Underwood-Memorial Hospital, Mobile Intensive Care Unit since 1985 and is also a Hazardous Materials Technician with the Gloucester County CBRNE Team. Steve is a member of the Gloucester County Fire Chief's Association, where he serves as a trustee and the organizations’ representative to the Gloucester County Communications Center Radio Advisory board. A life-long resident of Deptford Township , Steve currently lives in the Oak Valley section with his wife Susan, his daughter Shannon and his son Stephen Jr.
