Single Stream Recycling

What is single stream recycling?

Single stream (also known as fully commingled) recycling refers to a system in which all paper fibers and containers are mixed together into one container instead of being sorted into separate commodities (newspaper, cardboard, plastic, glass, etc.) by the resident and handled separately throughout the collection process. In single stream, the resident can now place all recycling material into the same container.

Accepted Materials

Aluminum, Steel & Tin Cans such as: soda cans, beer cans, pet food cans, soup, coffee, etc.

Glass Bottles such as: Flint (clear) Amber (brown) Emerald (green) etc.

Plastics such as: (PET #1) (HDPE #2) are the only kinds of plastic containers that are recyclable. Turn over your container and see if there is a #1or #2 in the center of the recycling logo, if so it's recyclable, if not place it in with your trash. Here are some examples of accepted materials: milk jugs, water bottles, soda, juice, detergent, shampoo, etc.

Rinse out all cans, bottles, and plastics containers of all food waste and liquids before placing in recycling bucket.

Mixed Paper/Cardboard/Chipboard etc.

All Cardboard and Chipboard MUST BE RECYCLED. Large Cardboard boxes need to be broken down so that they can be collected.

Here are some examples of accepted materials: Newspaper, junkmail, office type paper, corrugated cardboard, cereal boxes, etc.

Yard Waste Program

Deptford Township’s yard waste is a year around program, residents can place their grass clippings, sticks, twigs, and garden clippings in a container no larger than 30 gallons and must not exceed 50lbs in weight.

  • Note: dirt, rocks, sod, dog waste will not be accepted in these containers.
  • Yard Waste placed in plastic bags will not be accepted, but residents can use a biodegradable bag if needed.
  • YARD WASTE WILL BE PICKED UP FOLLOWING YOUR REGULAR TRASH COLLECTION DAY

Grasscycling and its benefits:

  • When grasscycling is properly done, clippings settle quickly between the growing blades of grass where they shelter the roots from the sun, conserving moisture. As they break down, they release more moisture as well as nutrients into the soil. This means that grass needs to be watered less frequently.
  • Clippings left on the lawn supply one-third or more of the nitrogen needed to keep your grass green and healthy.
  • A typical lawn of 5,000 square feet generates about 75 pounds of grass clippings per mowing. Research has shown that by mowing frequently (5-6 times per month) and not bagging those clippings can save lawn owners up to 40% of the time they spend on routine lawn care.

Simple steps for Grasscycling:

  • Cut only the top 1/3 of the grass blade and LEAVE the clippings right on the lawn.
  • Mow when the grass is dry to avoid tracking and clumping.
  • Keep your mower blade sharp.
  • No special equipment is necessary. While mulching mowers are available, and do a great job, ANY conventional mower can grasscycle, just remove the bag. (In the case of rear discharge mowers, the exhaust chute must be shut off.) Adapter kits or retro-fit kits are available for your conventional mower.

HOUSEHOLD SPECIAL WASTE COLLECTION DAYS
Since 1989, Gloucester County has conducted a series of collection days where residents can drop-off their "Household Special Waste" (HSW) at a designated location. In 1996, the GCIA, in cooperation with the Board of Chosen Freeholders, expanded the number of HSW events offered from two per year at one location to five per year at two locations. In 2000, the program added three additional days, bringing the total days offered to eight at two locations. This was done in an effort to provide a more convenient HSW disposal schedule for the County residents.
